Community of Educational Technology Support (ComETS) (more info)

ComETS is a campus educational technology support community designed to encourage networking and collaboration to better share resources and expertise. Anyone involved with teaching and learning with technology can join. ComETS promotes and sponsors events focused on technology, faculty engagement, instructional design, and associated teaching and learning topics. Members share information through a listserv, wiki, and periodic events. ComETS has Special Interest Groups (SIGs) for addressing specific topics or issues related to educational technology (e.g., Clickers, Simulations and Gaming for Higher Education, Social Networking, etc.). Several campus instruction librarians are on the ComETS Steering Committee.



Games and Simulations (more info)

There has been significant interest at UW-Madison regarding the use of computer games and simulations for educational purposes. The Engage Awards Web site provides additional information regarding campus initiatives, as does the Simulations and Games Special Interest Group.


Second Life

Second Life is a 3-D virtual world that costs no money to join. It is the current focus of the campus-wide Simulations and Games Special Interest Group. The CIMC has been working with faculty in the School of Education to integrate Second Life into their curriculum. For more information contact Catherine Stephens.


Delta Teaching and Learning Community (more info)

Part of the National Science Foundation Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL), Delta promotes professional development in teaching and learning for faculty and future faculty in all science, engineering, and mathematics departments focusing on CIRTL's Pillars: Teaching-as-Research, Learning Communities, and Learning-Through-Diversity. Instruction librarians from Steenbock and Wendt libraries have been involved with Delta.



Division of Information Technology (DoIT) (more info)

DoIT provides information technology services and support. Information about desktop productivity and collaboration tools — MyUW, MyWebSpace, WiscMail, and WiscCal — and instructional technologies — Learn@UW and WebSurvey — is available on the site.



DoIT Academic Technology (more info)

DoIT Academic Technology provides services to help faculty and instructional staff maximize their effectiveness through the use of technology. The site includes information about services, technologies, and technology reviews. DoIT Academic Technology has partnered with the campus LILI Program on several projects including the development of CLUE.



DoIT Professional Technical Education (more info)

DoIT PTE offers public classes that provide training in software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc.) usually at a cost. Classes change on a regular basis, and new classes are added weekly.



Engage (more info)

Engage is a program of DoIT that partners with UW-Madison faculty and academic staff to adapt, create, and integrate new and emerging technologies in support of teaching and learning. Its mission is transform teaching and learning through technology. Engage develops software and tools and sponsors the Adaptation Awards, which provide support to faculty and staff in applying technologies for teaching and learning. Several campus instruction librarians have been recipients of Adaptation Awards.



My Professional Development (more info)

Employees of UW-Madison may create personal profiles with this OHRD tool indicating the kinds of learning opportunities in which they are interested. After creating a personal profile, every month employees receive a list of workshops (some free, some at a cost) and other professional development opportunities by e-mail. Office of Human Resource Development (OHRD) (more info)

OHRD provides professional development and services to meet individual, group, and organization needs and to promote other professional development efforts within the University. Office of the Provost Teaching and Learning (more info)

The Teaching and Learning page of the Office of the Provost site provides links to resources related to the undergraduate learning experience, graduate/professional learning experience, faculty and staff teaching and learning, and related university resources. The campus LILI Program is a resource for this site.



Orientation and New Student Programs (more info)

The Office of Orientation and New Student Programs facilitates and enhances the first-year transition of all freshmen and undergraduate transfers. It runs Student Orientation, Advising, & Registration and Wisconsin Welcome, the summer and fall/January orientation programs for new students. The campus LILI Program participates in the SOAR resource fair and in Wisconsin Welcome activities. There is information about the first-year experience including First-Year Goals for UW-Madison students.



Teaching Academy (more info)

The Teaching Academy provides leadership to strengthen undergraduate, graduate, and outreach teaching and learning at UW-Madison. The Faculty Senate created the Teaching Academy in 1993. Its goal is to promote effective teaching and learning by encouraging innovation, experimentation, and dialogue among faculty, instructional staff, and teachers of the future. Its basic functions include: providing a forum for dialogue on effective teaching and learning; disseminating good practices of teaching and learning; linking individuals interested in improving teaching and learning; sponsoring professional development events; and analyzing issues and making recommendations on University policies affecting teaching and learning. The Teaching Academy sponsors events including the Scholarship on Teaching and Learning discussion series and e-Pedagogy online sessions.



Teaching and Learning Excellence (TLE) (more info)

TLE is a virtual center aimed at helping faculty and instructional staff enrich their courses and teaching by providing a crossroads among the many campus and college organizations and services available at UW-Madison. The site contains resources from campus and other sources related to teaching and learning and is maintained by the Office of the Provost. Content is grouped in four categories: Planning, Teaching and Learning, Assessing, and Developing.



Teaching and Learning Symposium (more info)

Each May the Provost's Office, Teaching Academy, DoIT, and the Libraries sponsor the annual Teaching and Learning Symposium spanning three days of presentations, panel discussions, and workshops. There is no cost to attend this event.



Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education (WISCAPE) (more info)

WISCAPE's mission is to facilitate and contribute to a dialogue about the challenges facing postsecondary education among education leaders and policymakers, community and government leaders, and other key stakeholders, including researchers, faculty, staff, and administrators. The goal of these exchanges is to increase participants' understanding of the complex structures and cultures in institutions of postsecondary education, thus improving their decision-making and leadership practices. WISCAPE carries out its mission through research and instruction, conferences and forums, and professional education programs.



WiLSWorld (more info)

Each July Wisconsin Library Services holds a one-and-half day conference with nationally-known keynote speakers and panels. The focus is new technologies and trends in libraries. Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) (more info)

The WAC Program, housed in the College of Letters and Science, helps faculty, instructional staff, and teaching assistants integrate writing creatively and successfully into their teaching. WAC offers workshops, sourcebook, Web site, individual consultations, co-teaching, and teaching and training opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. The campus LILI Program works closely with WAC on its Comm-B training manual.



The Writing Center (more info)

The Writing Center helps undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines become more effective, more confident writers. It offers individual consultations, workshops, curricular-based writing tutoring (undergraduate writing fellows), instructional materials, online writing center, and community writing centers. The LILI Program has close ties with the Writing Center.

Off-Campus Resources

Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) (more info)

ACRL is a professional association with the purpose of leading academic and research librarians and libraries in advancing learning and scholarship. ACRL holds a biennial national conference. The organization also sponsors other events including the Institute for Information Literacy Immersion Program as well as online seminars and Webcasts of conference programs. Publications include the ACRLog (official blog of ACRL), College & Research Libraries News (a monthly newsmagazine with articles on latest trends and practices in academic libraries and official news of ACRL), and College & Research Libraries (a bimonthly journal featuring scholarly research in academic librarianship).



ACRL Institute for Information Literacy (IIL) (more info)

ACRL's IIL has the goals of preparing librarians to become effective teachers in information literacy programs; supporting librarians and others in playing a leadership role in developing and implementing information literacy programs; and forging new relationships throughout the educational community to work towards information literacy curriculum development. Program initiatives include the Annual Immersion Programs, Institution Strategies: Best Practices, and Community Partnerships. The Annual Immersion Program offers three tracks: a Teacher Track for librarians relatively new to teaching: a Program Track for instruction librarians with programmatic responsibilities; and an Intentional Teacher Track for instruction librarians who have been teaching for a while and are looking for ways to revitalize their practice. Admission to Immersion is a competitive process. Applications are available online.



ACRL Characteristics of Programs of Information Literacy that Illustrate Best Practices: A Guideline (more info)

The document attempts to articulate elements of exemplary information literacy programs for undergraduate students at four-year and two-year institutions. The standards were approved by the ACRL Board in June 2003.



ACRL Information Literacy Web Site (more info)

ACRL's Information Literacy Advisory Committee's gateway to resources on information literacy to help you understand and apply the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education to enhance teaching, learning, and research in the higher education community. The site is organized into four sections: overview of information literacy, standards and guidelines, resources and ideas, and professional activity.



ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (more info)

Standards were reviewed by the ACRL Standards Committee and approved by ACRL Board on January 18, 2000. The document defines information literacy and discusses information literacy as related to information technology, higher education, and assessment as well as the use of the standards. Standards, performance indicators, and outcomes are listed.



ACRL Instruction Section (more info)

The ACRL Instruction Section enhances the ability of academic and research librarians to advance learning, teaching and research with respect to information literacy in higher education. Web site includes committees and projects, publications including newsletter, and information about past conference programs. The Section sponsors a program at the ALA annual conference.

PRIMO (Peer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online Database) (more info)

PRIMO is ACRL Instruction Section's database of peer-reviewed instructional materials created by librarians to teach people about discovering, accessing and evaluating information in networked environments. In February 2006, CLUE, a tutorial developed by the campus LILI Program, was selected as PRIMO's Site of the Month.



ALA Library Instruction Round Table (more info)

LIRT is an ALA roundtable advocating library instruction as a means for developing competent library and information use as a part of lifelong learning. LIRT membership represents all types of libraries (academic, public, school, and special) committed to this goal. LIRT sponsors a program at the ALA annual conference.



Distance Learning Conference (more info)

Each year the Annual Conference on Distance Teaching & Learning conference provides an exchange of current resources, research, and best practices from around the world relevant to the design and delivery of distance education/training. The conference program offers several keynotes and more than 150 concurrent sessions, workshops, forums, and course design showcases. The conference is held in Madison in August and is sponsored by the UW-Madison and organized by the Distance Education Professional Development, School of Education, and Office of Education Outreach.



Educause (more info)

Educause is a nonprofit association with the mission to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. Membership is open to institutions of higher education, corporations serving the higher education information technology market, and other related associations and organizations. As an employee of a member institution, you can attend conferences at a discount. Resources include professional development activities, applied research, strategic policy advocacy, teaching and learning initiatives, online information services, print and electronic publications (books, monographs, and the magazines, Educause Quarterly and Educause Review), special interest collaborative communities, and awards for leadership and exemplary practices.



Library Orientation Exchange (LOEX) (more info)

LOEX is a self-supporting, non-profit educational clearinghouse for library instruction and information literacy information. Founded in 1971 after the "First Annual Conference on Library Orientation" at Eastern Michigan University, LOEX (Library Orientation Exchange) has grown from a lending repository of library instruction materials and host of an annual conference on the subject to an internationally known organization that serves as a conduit for those working in the field. In addition to the annual conference with published proceedings, LOEX produces a quarterly publication (LOEX Quarterly) featuring articles by teaching librarians, a monthly current awareness e-letter (LOEX Currents), and a Web site which points to examples of work in the field of library instruction and information literacy. Since UW-Madison is a member of LOEX, you can sign up to join the LOEX e-list for receipt of LOEX Currents and LOEX Quarterly. The campus LILI Coordinator forwards to info-lit the messages from the e-list.



National Forum on Information Literacy (more info)

The National Forum on Information Literacy was created in 1989 as a response to the recommendations of the American Library Association's Presidential Committee on Information Literacy. Through its member organizations, the Forum examines the role of information in our lives and integrates information literacy into their programs. The Web site includes a bibliography of publications on the topic of information literacy and an Information Literacy Blog.



Teaching Learning and Technology Group (more info)

TLT Group is a nonprofit corporation with a commitment to improving teaching and learning especially in higher education. Its mission is to motivate and enable institutions and individuals to improve teaching and learning with technology, while helping them cope with continual change.



Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians (more info)

WAAL is the official academic library division of the Wisconsin Library Association (WLA). WAAL is also a state chapter of the Association of College & Research Libraries. WAAL is dedicated to the improvement of library services to Wisconsin's academic and research community. Through its activities, committees, and publications, WAAL provides opportunities for professional development and personal growth to all who work in Wisconsin's college, university, and technical school libraries.

WAAL includes an Information Literacy Committee which wrote and published as a brochure, "Information Literacy Competencies and Criteria for Academic Libraries in Wisconsin." The Committee frequently organizes instruction-related programs for both the WLA (fall) and WAAL (spring) annual conferences.
